I want to buy a USB KVM for two MacBook Pros and use the keyboard/mouse part, but not the video (so it can be DVI or VGA--don't care).

The main thing I want is to be able to switch the computer by a simple keystroke on the keyboard. This could be Ctrl-Ctrl (as my old Linksys used to do...) or something similar. I do NOT want to have to touch anything other than the keyboard plugged into the KVM.

Price doesn't matter.

Only want to use a USB mouse/keyboard with it--don't care about other USB devices or audio. I don't currently use a wireless mouse, nor do I use multimedia keys that seems to give problems for some USB KVMs (I have a Kinesis FreeStyle keyboard).

I want to switch back and forth rapidly without the computers having to re-scan the USB bus.

Any suggestions?

Should be able to pop in to any local Best Buy and find something like this. Last time I was there, I had a harder time finding one with a physical button to switch rather than a hot-key on the keyboard.

The issue is probably going to come down to one pretty substantial thing: what keystroke the KVM recognizes as the hotkey for switching. I had one that was great except that it wanted a particular "CTL-" keystroke to switch which HAD to be a Windows keyboard. Very unfriendly-and an off-brand, so I wouldn't worry about that one in particular. But be VERY clear what keystroke you need to hit before laying money down.

These gadgets are getting to be pretty easy to find, even with lots of extras like audio switching. Shop carefully and be ready to pay a little ($5-$15 maybe) more for what you really want. Then go for it.

I can custom-make a KVM with your specifications. Is $300 too much for you?
