Hey guys,

Is there any word on the street about a new Dell 24" wide screen monitor? The Dell 3008 wide screen monitor was announced recently by Dell along with the new crystal 22" display, but nothing about a new "2408" monitor.

I'm in the market for a monitor, but I can wait until June or so before making the purchase. If no new monitor is in the works, I might as well buy a Dell 2407-HC monitor now, but since the new 3008 monitors come with a 3000:1 contrast ratio, I'm kind of looking forward to something similar in a "2408" (assuming there will be one this year).

Thanks,

Jason

I think you're right, with the 2008 and 3008 out a 2408 seems inevitable. Rumors say end of the month for the 2408.

Great, thanks mduell. Hopefully there will be one out by the end of this month so I can finally upgrade from my 17" LCD screen. I can't even remember when I bought this thing!

Yep, here's how Engadget summarized it:
Dell's 24-inch, Ultrasharp 2408WFP monitor is up and dancing on Dell's US page. $748 buys into a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, 178-degree viewing angle, 1,300:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 6-ms response, and 102% color gamut. Standard stuff until you get to the vast suite of jacks: HDMI, 2x DVI, DisplayPort, VGA, Composite, S-Video, Component, a single USB upstream, and 2x USB downstream.

DisplayPort is a next generation display interconnect to replace DVI/HDMI.

YES! Thanks for the heads up guys! I'll be purchasing one very soon!

Just to double check... It WILL run on my 4G Powerbook right? I have the upgraded video card (specs in sig).

Thanks again!

Hmm, I don't see it on the Dell website currently. I was hoping that the 2408 would have the 3000:1 contrast ratio that the 3008 has, but I guess this will have to do. However, the 3007 is $300 bucks more than the 2408... If only my powerbook could run a 30" monitor!

The 3008 looks very nice, spec wise. I think it might be a big improvement over my original rev. 1 Apple 30" Cinema with its one and only port and no internal scaler.

Yeah, the 3008 seems VERY nice. I'd spring for one, but really can't afford one at that price! The 2408 is the one for me, though I've been eyeing a 30" monitor of some sort for a while now.

I just hope the 2408 is "officially" released by Dell soon so I can get my hands on one! I'm tired of using my 17" NEC monitor.

Word on other forums (e.g. Hardforum) is that the 2408WFP monitor has been discontinued (prematurely?), or that the first batch have been recalled.

Personally, I don't know anyone, nor have heard of anyone, receiving an actual shipping model, though. Those who've ordered have had their orders cancelled by Dell, being offered the older 2407 instead. Or maybe, just maybe, Dell hasn't built enough yet to ship.

Yikes, I was really looking forward to the 2408! I hope it will be scheduled for release soon.

As a side question, what is DisplayPort technology worth to most people? I'm not really sure of it's benefits. Which graphics cards support DisplayPort? Dell has a sale on their 2407-HC monitors and they are looking mighty pretty right now.

Thanks for the heads up ginoledesma!

Well, DisplayPort is a nice future-proofing feature (for now). Not too many consumer devices sporting that yet, so it will be some time before you can take advantage of it. I'm more interested in the dual DVI ports the monitor offers as it comes in very handy for me.

DisplayPort WILL be the next standard though? I'm planning on investing in a Mac Pro this June, but I really don't think it's necessary. I can get along fine with an iMac, but I think I can justify the extra costs for the sake of "future proofing."

I guess I shouldn't skimp out on the monitor at this point.

Hope the 2408 is released soon! The TV in my apt is quite small, and having a 24" monitor would be nice, especially in conjunction with my XBOX 360

DisplayPort is in the running with a few others to become the next standard. The industry may go with it (like DVI) or be split (like HDDVD vs BluRay) for a while.
I think I've seen one graphics card with DisplayPort, so it's not widely adopted yet.

The HDDVD vs BluRay format war is ridiculous! Why can't we all just get along?

I guess the question I need to ask myself right now is: What is DisplayPort worth to me? Because $599 for the 2407-HC seems like a good deal in my books! I'll just wait until June or whenever the 2408 is released and make a decision then.

Well, it depends on what gear you have. There is no Mac (or a device that will run on Mac OS X) currently on the market that will drive DisplayPort. I'd say we're at least 1-1.5 years away from seeing one on the Mac side.

I'd say go for the 2407-HC if it can get you on the ground running (i.e. productive). They're pretty well priced. That being said, paying for the premium for DisplayPort for the sake of future-proofing isn't too practical in my book, since it will be quite some time before you actually get to use that technology.

Well, I went ahead and got the 2407-HC with the 5-year advanced exchange program. The total with tax came out to $702. I guess it's better this way because with the $748 base price tag on the 2408, I'm sure the total would have come out to a lot more.

I'm looking forward to the new monitor! I can finally retire my 17" NEC monitor
