Canon just announced a new all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax. It looks pretty cool to me but I've never used a Canon before. Any thoughts on this new model versus the HP OfficeJet L7680?

I think the real question is when will Canon update the rest of their printers? The high quality photo ink jets haven't been updated in about a year.

I was just getting ready to buy the Canon MP830. Now I'm going to wait and buy the new MX850.

I bought an MX310 a month or so ago and I'm really happy with it. I was going to buy the 8xx series (the major differentiating features being memory card support, a better LCD and Ethernet), but the 310 offered what I needed and was just compact enough to fit where I need it to in my office.

I would get the MX850. It's basically an MP830 except with the addition of ethernet (I have an MP830). Canons are great with ink consumption, and I love the automatic duplexing on both the ADF and the printing side (so 2-sided to 2-sided copying is nice and easy).

According to the Canon website the MX850 has about 1000 more ink nozzles too. Not exactly sure what that gives you but it's a substantial difference.

Compared to the 830, this new one seems to have an improved scanner: 4800x9600dpi vs 2400x4800.

The dimensions & weight on the new model are also a tad smaller and lighter.

I'm interested in the MX850 too. In particular I'd like to know if scanning over the network also works with a Mac.

Is there a possibility to scan directly to a server, e.g. to a ftp or smb server?

Received my MX850 yesterday. The only negative comment i have with the machine is that scanning over a 'ethernet network' forces you to use Canon's MP Navigator EX software (which totally sucks).

If you have the MX850 connected via USB, then when you scan, the image goes directly into Image Capture and it's 1-2-3 easy. But MP Navigator is a useless slow BUGGY program which i'm now forced to use. Side note: if you are scanning via Ethernet, you have to install this Canon IJ Network Scan Utility in your menu bar. It has to be active or the MX850 won't see your computer. You won't realize this until you read the manual.

Printing, Copying and Faxing are easy and great!

Hopefully Canon updates their software drivers frequently. Cause now i'm married to them.

Canon treats MACOS as a Cinderella. You can't use the machine to send a fax from your Mac.
(this driver is available on Windows). Does anybody know a solution for this (an "universal driver"?

What is CUPS printer driver? I see that Canon already released an update for that driver, but i'm not sure why i would download that driver over the regular printer driver.
