Depends on the carrier. ATT and Tmobile use GSM, which will work in Europe, but they lock the phones so you can't just swap in a European SIM. Tmobile will give you an unlock code after a few months of paying your bill.

ATT will also give you an unlock code after a few months of paying your bill. I just did it with my SE w580i.

'Course, you can buy an unlocked model, but the price is usually much steeper.
