Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone is able to give me some advice on how to go about adding a second video card to my Mac Pro? I've currently got an ATI Radeon 2600 XT 256MB in it and would like to add a Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB.
My machine is a 2007 Mac Pro (Australia) with 2 x 2.66Ghz Intel Core2 Duo processors, 5GB ram, 2 x 250GB HDD, 1 x 320GB HDD, 1 x 20" widescreen LCD Apple Cinema Display, 1 x 22" Viewsonic VX2235WM-5 widescreen LCD HD display.
How do I go about adding the card in? Do I just open up the case, whack the card in a PCI slot and fire it up? Do I need to install any specific software or firmware in order to get the best performance from it? I've heard people mention something called Crossfire (or a similar name).
If there is anyone who could give me some tips, advice or a bit of a guide to doing this that would be great.
Cheers,
Rob.

No, the 8800GT will not work in your Mac Pro. The 8800GT firmware is not compatible with the previous generation of Mac Pros. This may change in the future; if it does, you can just replace the 2600XT with the 8800GT unless you want to use more than two monitors.

Thanks very much for that reply mduell - much appreciated.
That being said, can someone recommend a card with similar performance to the 8800GT that will work alongside the 2600XT? 512MB would be preferable, but I'm not that choosy about the brand.
I'm looking to do a lot of high end graphics work, digital video, music and gaming.
Thanks again all and I look forward to some interesting replies.
Cheers,
Rob.

There isn't one; you're limited to the options Apple has released, so there's no brand choice. The best option for you Mac Pro currently is the X1900XT ($399), but it's about a third to half as fast as the 8800GT.

Thanks mate, will probably go with one of those. Any increase is better for the moment.
Cheers,
Rob.
