is there a way/hack to get the apple tv to play a mkv file? i want to see how much better they would look on my tv.

for that matter, is there a way to get the apple tv to play ripped movies in the vob format? i rip with mtr and like that front row now plays those... wish atv would do the same.

U can save as .mov the .mkv files via Quicktime, a format supported by the Apple TV. For other conversions use VisualHub.

To do the .mov to .mkv trick in Quicktime you must install perian. Then Quicktime can read .mkv files thus allowing the conversion.

ok, so i installed perian on my imac. i created a few mkv files to test out. quicktime will open and play them, after you tell it which application to use initially, however there is no audio. also, it calls the mkv file a "quicktime player document". any ideas what is going wrong? thanks for the help.
