unhappy apple bluetooth mouse

my apple bluetooth mouse is unhappy. original model not a mighty mouse. anyway i've been using this mouse for years and i replaced the batteries again tonight. mouse will now click on something but no longer controls the cursor. i've tried both powering and unpowering both computer and mouse---no good. it shows up as connected in system preferences and again it will click on something so i know something is reading right but will not move the cursor, any ideas?
