I've search online and the forum here but haven't been able to fix my printer (although it appears to be a common problem).
I'm using a 4.5 year old HP Deskjet 5150. This morning I got a "pen failure" message with blinking lights. I cancelled the job and the lights stopped blinking. But when I try to print, my printer utility after a while gives up says, "Jobs Stopped."
I tried a few things -- unplugging everything, resetting printer in Mac OSX System Preferences, and even changed the black and color ink cartridges.
Any thoughts?
I'm also open to printer recommendations?

What does HP say? This sound like a printer issue, not related to your Mac.

FWIW, I found this at the hp.com forum.
I tried hard resetting the printer.
On the first attempt to print after turning off/turning on (the printer), I'm getting an error message in the print utility, but it's gone about as soon as it appears so I'm not sure what it says. I did see the word "connection(s)" but I've checked the connections. BTW, I'm printing through Airport.

Try connecting directly in that case. See if the problem persists.

Yeah, I should have thought of that. But I just checked, and it still didn't work.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere, I think.
When I printed directly from the computer the other day, I didn't select the printer connected via USB, which is why it didn't work. I tried again today, and it worked (connected directly)
Also, I just ran Network Diagnostics and got a message, "Cannot connect to server," specifically, "hp deskjet 5100._riousprint._tcp.local" (for the printer connected via Airport).
But I'm not sure exactly what that means or what to do about it. Any ideas? :-)

Fixed!
Thanks to the info on this page, I found troubleshooting info at Apple.com.
Turning off and unplugging my AirPort Extreme Base Station fixed my problem. That was about the only thing I didn't try. I've done that for my internet connection before, but have never had to do it for the printer before.
Lesson learned.
