I am in the market for a new digital camera since mine got stolen and wanted your opinions on this camera. I'm your average tourist type of guy so I don't need a DSLR. I just want a COMPACT (aka skinny and light so that means no AA/AAA batteries) point and shoot digital camera with decent picture and video capabilities under $300 or so.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35: Digital Photography Review
Highlights IMO are the 25mm (35mm equivalent) lens and the ability to shoot video in 720p. And no, I don't want a Canon.
edit: I just noticed that it does not zoom in while in movie mode. It can zoom in before, but not during. Any other Panasonic cameras in this price range and feature set that can do so?

You need to step up to the Lumix DMC-TZ5 to get zooming in movie mode. It's not as small as the FX35 but it's fairly compact considering it's packing a 10x zoom lens.

Thanks, but it is too fat for me and has a 2.5'' screen. Ideally, I would like a 2.7''+ screen size as I do not use any viewfinder. Does anyone know if this camera can zoom in while in video mode?

It is slightly out of my price range, but worth it if it can zoom in plus it has a 3.0'' screen. Although, I am not fond of the touchscreen as I think it is a gimmicky feature, it said that it has joystick operations. I also will buy it with my $50 gift certificate off amazon.

I recently discovered that the TZ4 can also zoom in video mode. However, the video mode is not HD and the screen size is also 2.5'' as opposed to 3.0'' in the TZ5. I'm not too big in making movies so I guess HD is not really an issue.
But TZ4 at $275 off amazon or the $350 TZ5?

I bought the TZ5 off amazon if anyone is interested. Seems to not be much interest in this camera around here.
I bought it over the TZ4 because it is more future proof. I figure that I might need the 720p video later on. I'm off to buy more memory for my iMac tomorrow.
Anyways, estimated shipping is April 16 to May 8.
