This is not iMac specific, so I've moved it to consumer hardware.

Most will fit the bill. Depends on how big you need, speed, connection type, etc.. Heck, a hard drive ipod will do if speed isn't important. OWC has some nice external drives. I have one for my 24 inch iMac and works flawlessly. Do you need this for backup? or just to transfer files? If backup, would suggest a 750 or 1TB drive partitioned, half for each system.

There are hundreds of threads with the same question. The answer hasn't changed much.
Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 1Q10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 1Q10 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010
