A quick question about apple tv, can it only pull files from your mac if they are in the itunes library?
For instance i have an external drive with a couple of hudred gig of movies on it and i wondering how i can view them on apple tv with out disconnecting the drive from my mac and connecting it via USB to apple tv.

You would need to convert your movies to MPEG4 format and then put them in your iTunes library. This is the only way for them to sync and download to Apple TV.

I suppose the real question here is that i am wanting to play AVI files on an apple tv using a patch that is widely available. These files will not be in my itunes library. How will apple tv locate non itunes files.

AFAIK, non supported files must be copied to the ATV. I just hacked mine yesterday.

You have to install ATVFiles on your ATV which adds a new menu item to your ATV, and you play all Divx, XVid by going there.
