I have a MacBook Pro with a 120 GB hard drive. It's basically full, so I purchased an external Lacie 2Big 500 GB RAID drive system (two 500 GB drives). I immediately loaded almost 400 GB of HD home video on this drive pair, purchased specifically for the RAID backup capability. So far so good.
Only two weeks later, the Lacie RAID array starts returning a lot of errors. The drive only half works, one partition out of two is non-functional and non-repairable. Thankfully, the partition with my videos is still functional (so far).
My next thought - get my data off this drive ASAP and return it to Amazon. I have a week left to return it within my 30 day window. What do I do now? Purchase a single drive at an Apple store locally and use that? I can't wait for Amazon or others to ship a new drive or I'll miss my window to return this drive. A single drive doesn't give me much piece of mind. These videos are of my kids, and are priceless. I need a rock solid backup solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I've already spent $400 on this Lacie RAID array.
Help!

I say buy your own enclosure and drives. Although it's actually cheaper to buy a pre-built external drive if you're buying on the low-end (<500 GB and USB), it makes sense to buy your own. I just bought an SATA card, dual enclosure and two Spinpoint 750 GB drives but have yet to install them. As for LaCie, it was a decent brand at one point but I've only read negative anecdotes about their drives in recent years.

I've solved my problem. I should have just gone to the Apple store from the start. I went there to get a single external drive as a short term solution, and ended up with another 2 disk external RAID for LESS than I paid at Amazon for the LaCie drive. Gotta love Apple, even their store "just works." Total time spent in the Apple store solving this problem? Four minutes. I'm impressed.

Which one did you get? Brand? Model? What drive mechanisms are in the RAID setup you bought? What does Apple have to do with the RAID setup you bought in their store? Do they make it "just work" better?
The point I think Big Mac and I were trying to make was that you can empower yourself and get good hardware on the cheap by doing a little research (or clicking links in this thread ), and you'll know exactly what you're working with.
Your response is almost like our previous posts weren't even there.
