I have a 200gb external hard drive that I split in half. I formatted the first partition two weeks ago, but I didn't format the 2nd one. Now I'm ready to format it but when I get to the 'Choose the Partition Scheme' or whatever it show, I'm a little confused.

Looking at the scheme, 'Current' show the one partition I'm using and the blank space. I put the mouse cursor on the blank space and when I click Partition, it looks like it wants to format the 1st partition because it show it's volume name.

If I choose a number, 1-2-3-4 etc, it seems to show the original partition as blank along with the free space.

My question is how do I choose the blank space to be partition and formatted without affecting the 1st partition? I'm using Disk Utility to do this.

I hope this make sense.

Thnx.

Use the Erase tab instead of the Partition tab. Select the partition on the left side of the Disk Utility pane and then click the Erase tab. You'll be able to erase/format just the blank partition.

I'm using Tiger and using Disk Utility all I see on the left hand side is the full disk and the partition I want to keep, volume name is MyData. I do not see any empty space. Only when I choose Partition tab do I see the empty space.

Well never mind now, I've just deleted the MyData volume so now I will just format the complete drive.

Thanks.
