Hi there,

I bought a new 500GB Lacie usb drive since I outgrew my 250GB for time machine. Now the damn thing won't spin down when putting my mac to sleep/shutting down. Which is VERY annoying. I really don't want to unmount/shutdown the drive every time I put my iMac to sleep. Any ideas on how to fix this ? Anybody else having the same problem.

Returning isn't really possible.

Apparantly. It is a silent drive though. I'll probably just pull it out and put it in another enclosure.
Are so called "SATA" enclosures compatible with all types of SATA ? The drive in that lacie is a Samsung SATA300 drive (spinpoint HD501LJ IIRC).
And is it me or are there no reasonably priced SATA enclosures with FireWire. They all seem to be USB2 only. I'd like to get a FW400 case if possible. If I'm going to spend money on a new enclosure I'd like tot get a FW one instead of USB.

FireWire is unfortunately on its way out, despite its technological advantages (e. g. that FireWire 2.5" drives just work and better performance), but c'est la vie.

I was in a local Mac store (big chain in Germany, actually), and they had exactly no enclosure that could power itself down. Ditto for the best computer store in town for parts. It's a big gripe, because I have to switch one of the drives off manually (my external drives are hidden behind my printer).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I find it pretty amazing that they even consider making them that way. I can't believe for a second that it would add tot the cost of the enclosure. Think of all the wasted electricity !

The firewire/usb thing pretty much sucks since USB is S L O W compared to FW400.
