Revisiting Garmin GPS Issues

I have a Garmin eTrex Legend handheld GPS receiver. I love it. But Garmin doesn't love me, apparently.

I bought a USB-Serial controller cable so that I could connect the thing to my Mac. I know the cable works, because when I boot into Windows it's seen, Garmin's Windows apps see the device, and they all talk together. But even though the cable is seen in System Profiler as being connected to the Mac, it will not allow Garmin's OS X apps to see the device.

I'm using the cable manufacturer's driver for OS X (by the way, where should I look for the other drivers I tried installing, so I can get rid of them), and it is definitely seen. But not the device itself.

Is this Garmin, OS X, or something else?
