Hey folks, hope someone can help shed some light on this problem.
Like many other folk, we purchased and WD Passport 320 GB and swapped its drive with a MacBook (2 GHz Core Duo) 100 GB internal. Everything went smoothly, using Carbon Copy Cloner to dupe the contents of the old internal to the WD, installed the WD into the MacBook and everything worked fine.
BUT, there seems to be a lag every so often. It is not specific to an application (has happened in Firefox, InDesign, even the Finder)... getting a spinning beach ball and cannot do anything for 15-20 seconds. Then once it "catches up", the computer performs all the clicks that were done during the lag time.
What could the problem be?

Sounds like the WD disk is slow to spin up from sleep.

This is true, it is slow to spin up from sleep, but the lag or delay seems to keep happening at random times, even after being "awake" for a while.

I mean the disk sleeping, not the whole machine. The app you're using may need to access the disk for a read or write.
Does the WD Passport enclosure have a single or dual USB plug? It could be to fit within the power spec of a single USB plug they had to use a motor that is slow to spin up.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I suspect that as well. The WD Passport has a single USB plug, AFAIK.

Sup Courtney! awesome to see ya. haven't seen you around for years!
About your problem it sounds like you guys hit the nail on the head. It may be less noticeable with a faster drive in there. My external houses only iTunes audio, yet when it spins up it will cause a short beachball in apps besides iTunes.
Also could happen when Spotlight is indexing.

Hey Drew! Yeah, I pop in every so often, usually with a problem or question
I guess we're just gonna swap the drives again and maybe get a faster one. We'll see...
