After playing around with Apple's new Remote app for the iPhone, I really want to have a dedicated iTunes machine sitting on my network to serve up music all over my house. I need a few suggestions however... Here's what I'm thinking, I want the machine to have in the ballpark of 2 or 3 terabytes of disk space and since it will strictly just be running iTunes and streaming it over my house, I'd like it to have a very very low power processor thats in the 700-1ghz speed range (via? amd?). On top of that a hacked x86 version of OS X stripped down to run nothing but iTunes.

Basically I am just looking for hardware suggestions

Thanks for your help.

You want a low power PC for a network server? Justifiable, maybe...
Just for an iTunes server? Getting less reasonable...
And you want to make it a hackintosh? Crazy insane or insane crazy.

How about a ReadyNAS Duo? Drop in another disk and you've got a 2TB appliance that includes an iTunes server. Yes, it's slightly more expensive than a low end PC you pieced together; it's a lot less effort and doesn't consume much power.

Everytime I want to get use an old MAC as a server (sawtooth, etc), I run into expensive firewire external enclosures, excessive power consumption and noise (MDD, etc.).

I'm getting old and frankly completely agree with just using a old laptop as a server (ssh proxy, etc.)
and a NAS box for doing everything else.

When you have an itunes server on a readynas or drobo or the like (what about the mediasmart units by HP btw?), can you edit what goes on the playlists etc and can they also sync music to ipods / iphones or would you have to have a copy also on a 'home'/'host' computer to which you dock your idevice?

Maybe Mduell can chime in? Thanks!
