Just bought the new Canon SD790 IS digital camera and it has video/usb outs on it. How do I get this to work with my MAC so I can stream / record video, etc? (imovie, photobooth, etc)

Thanks!

It's Mac, not MAC.

Some cameras do support a webcam-like mode (although it's usually not UVC, so it wouldn't work with iChat/etc anyway), but I don't see anything about the SD970 supporting that. The video output is for displaying shots you've taken, so even a video input device for your Mac wouldn't really help.

It would be nice to gain some advice without attitude. You really don't want to get started with me. I'll call it whatever I feel like calling it.

It sounds like you are saying that this camera cannot act as an external device for capture.

That blows.

Calm down, no one is trying to start an argument, simply pointing out a misunderstanding.

Have you checked the Canon website for compatibility or software for Mac OS X? Also since this is really a peripheral or consumer hardware, I'll move it to that forum since it will get more traffic for the related subject and it isn't directly related to MacBooks or MacBook Pros.

I'm entirely calm. There is no misunderstanding.

It is in fact a macbook pro issue because it works on my PC and not MAC. Canon said to use the CD and that has nothing on it but lame software to view images.

I'm sure it would work on your MacBook Pro if you ran Windows on it, hence it is a peripheral vs OS X issue & as far as I'm concerned lives in here.

I guess I should have posted something like: "what external cameras work on a macbook pro" or "how to switch the isight capture device on a macbook pro"

Right. Good start there...

Anyway, I can't find any info on using it as a webcam (the first Google result is this thread, intrestingly enough). According to this page it doesn't have any webcam capabilities.

If you're just talking about transferring video files from the camera to the harddrive you should be able to do that easily with Image Capture.

I don't know of any cameras that work with Media Access Control. Sorry, you're out of luck here.

It sounds like it uses a proprietary protocol for the webcam feature, and it's unlikely that there's software for OS X with support for that protocol.
