I'm looking to get some vga adaptor dongles for a projector I've recently bought, although I'm a little confused by the plethora of dongles available, what I want to know is, are the Mini DVi to VGA and Mini VGA to VGA adaptors actually the same thing as the connection (to the Mac) looks similar.

That all depends on what Mac you have.

Well the projector is going to be used with various Mac's and PC's, it has a VGA out, and finding a standard DVI to VGA adaptor shouldn't be much of a prob, but I'm just wondering about Mac with a Mini DVI connection (aka MacBooks, IMac G5 upwards etc) I think there's also a Mini VGA out on some older Mac's too, just wondered if one adpator would work for both.

MacBooks - Mini DVI to VGA
iBooks - Mini VGA to VGA

So you'll need to have different adapters for different Macs.

Mactracker will tell you what VGA/DVI connectors your Macs have.

iBook (G3 with slot-loading discs), iBook G4, iMac G4: Mini-VGA
PowerBook G4 12": mini-VGA on early ones, mini-DVI on later ones

The upshot is, assuming it's a VGA projector, you need to have available (perhaps chained down with cable ties so people can use whichever they need:

1x DVI->VGA adapter (which shipped with most Macs that need it)
1x mini-DVI->VGA
1x mini-VGA->VGA

I wouldn't bother buying a micro-DVI->VGA for a MacBook Air, since they all ship with it standard in the box, so every owner of those Macs has one.
