I want to break free of the wire .. and got a MacBook. Can I use AirPort as a base station plugged into the phone jack. I live waaaay out where only crappy wire, or Sat, comes. Thanks. (I never needed to know this in 20yrs of Macs?!)

The current airport base stations don't support dial-up. The older models do -- from years ago -- and you may be able to find them on eBay or posting an ad in our Marketplace forum.

Yeah, I don't know if any modern routers support modems.

You could buy a really old Airport, those worked quite well. I had one running a dial up connection for a while. I think the "snow" Airport base stations were the last ones to optionally come with a modem.
