So I just read about this docking station for SATA hard disks on BareFeats.

The docking station takes both sizes of disks and has a USB and eSATA port. At $35 it seems quite inexpensive especially considering that it ships with all kinds of accessories.

I saw another model at Newegg. A tad cheaper but essentially the same idea.

I like the idea of being able to easily dock a HDD. With things like TM it's good to upgrade to larger/faster disks every so often and this seem much more convenient than swapping a disk in an enclosure. At the same time it's probably convenient for troubleshooting other people's busted disks/installations.

Does anybody here have one of these? Can anybody comment on it? Is the transformer 110V/60Hz only or can it also take 230V/50Hz abroad?

I agree - hot swapping, especially with TM, is good. However if you're going to upgrade your TM drive, it would make sense to clone what was on the old one over to the new one, otherwise you're just starting afresh. I think this would be much better for periodical off-site backups.

One thing which concerns me is with the majority of the drive exposed, would this not make it more susceptible to dust and possible damage?

Well the TM stuff is going to be transfered to the new disk regardless of which kind of enclosure I use.

I've been wondering about disk exposure too. I don't think dust is a problem, the disk is sealed anyway. But I do wonder how much noise will increase.

I wouldn't be worried about dust as much as accidental damage to the logic board on the bottom of the drive. Static of course is a danger, but so is damaging the components.

I haven't used one of the docking stations, though I do have one of those universal drive adapters from OWC.

That's what I was first planning on getting. I figured it would be convenient when tinkering around or when you quickly need to help somebody with a screwed up install.

But then I noticed these docks come with eSATA in addition to USB and some also act as USB hubs or card readers, etc. That sounds very convenient to me. So I'll probably be getting such a dock in lieu of a drive adapter.
