[CENTER]LaCie 5big Network

Read on LaCie storage products and I surprised to find unfavourable users' feedback. Tech reviews are generally useless to me. But users' feedback are more helpful because users are the one who experienced the products. What unfavourable stuff? Well, it seems that LaCie storage products are prone to faster failures. In order words, good to look at but crap in usage. Wonder whether it's worth to get this or DIY a RAID5 myself.

There are better products on the market from Netgear, Thecus, Synology, etc.

Lacie used to be a Mac mainstay, but I haven't heard much of anything good about their products in many years. Anecdotally speaking, of course.

Thanks guys. Perhaps, I shouldn't let the design cloud my buying decision. Yup, haven't heard any good feedback about LaCie for quite a long time too.

It's a sweet looking design, yes, but it probably costs a fortune for those looks.

It's only $900 with $250 worth of disk, which is on the cheap side for 5 bay NAS. I expect the performance and reliability to be poor.

I recently bought a 4-bay RAID called DataTale by a maker called Onnto. The ID design is quite cool, trayless and quad interface. It is not as well known but I think performance and function wise, it is better than many branded RAID. I like the fact that it is not sealed box, I can put my old HDD into the RAID and hot swap anytime. Decent product.

That Onnto DataTale sounds great. Is it noisy? I'm considering it for my mac mini htpc, but am afraid it'll make too much noise for the living room.
