We just got a new Canon PIXMA MP480 for Christmas.
I went to Canon's site to download the drivers, but there are 2 listed for OSX.
One is described as a "CUPS" driver (ver. 10.6.0.0), the other seems to be a regular driver (ver. 7.7.0).
Not sure which to download and install.
Thanks,
-Ted

Mine is a MP530, and I had installed the following:
- Canon MP Navigator 2.22
- Canon Printer driver (the regular driver)
- Canon Scan driver
I didn't install the CUPS driver. Then, you could download the drivers from Apple which I guess are going to list under Software Update once you have the Canon installed.

I always take the CUPS driver. The other software may be Canon utilities.

I'd use the non-CUPS version. That's what I've always used for mine.

Isn't CUPS, similar to GIMP, more a last way out if nothing else works and you can't find a driver?

This is what I've always thought too. I use the regular drivers.

Actually, CUPS is more of a Linux-flavored source for printer drivers. Not a "last resort," but certainly not the same as if the manufacturer bothered to write an OS X specific driver themselves either. One thing I've noted about CUPS drivers is that they tend to be very flexible; when I couldn't find the exact driver for my old Samsung laser printer, it turned out that the one for a somewhat earlier printer worked just fine.

Why not set it up twice, once with the CUPS driver, once with the OS X driver?
Any reason that would create problems? You could certainly find out which one gave the best results...
