I've been able to connect my MacBook Pro to the internet through my cell phone (SE K850i) using PAN and Bluetooth. However, the connection speed is abysmal (generally less than 100kbps, with ping times over 10000ms). After doing some experimenting, I believe that the slow connection is due to a Bluetooth driver issue. (I booted my Mac with Bootcamp, and received downloads of 300 to 500 kbps, and received better speeds (topping off at about 150kbps) on an old powerbook G4.
Assuming I'm correct, and that the Bluetooth Firmware is the issue, I'd like to see if I can connect my Mac to the internet via a USB Cable. When I plug the phone into the Mac, it creates two new "Modem" ports and a second Ethernet Port (en3)
When I look at the serial port configuration, I get a standard dial-up page, with Telephone Number, Account Name and Password all blank. I can click on the "Advanced" button, and select the Sony Ericsson script, and enter the correct APN. However, when I hit the "Connect" button, nothing happens. The cell phone does not do anything, there is no change to any status on the Networking page, and nothing is recorded in the system log.
Has anyone been successful tethering their computer to their phone over USB?
