I'm thinking about getting one of these, in the 500 GB size. I had considered the "Studio" model with Firewire, but it adds about $50 here to the price. So, I'm sticking with the USB 2 one for cost reasons.

It will be used mainly as a boot drive backup to my MacBook and iMac. It will be also used for light data backup on various Macs. Since it's USB 2, I can't boot a PowerPC Mac (of which I have several) off of it, but that's irrelevant because I was going to format it as GUID PT anyway. I will use my (smaller) FW drives to backup my PowerPC boot partitions. However, I should be able to mount it for data backup on any of my PowerPC Macs, since they all run late versions of Tiger 10.4 or else Leopard 10.5.

However, what I am concerned about is USB power. Have any of you run into problems mounting these WD My Passport drives off USB power? My last USB drive wouldn't mount on any Mac via single-port USB only, but it was mainly used as a FW enclosure, and it had a much older drive which may have required more power at startup.

I have an older version. It has worked great since purchase, is durable and compact, and I've never had issues with power over USB 2.

If you don't mind my asking, which Mac(s) do you have?

OK, thx. It's been ordered.

I'll pick it up tomorrow. I did the local shop thing so I can return it if USB 2 power is an issue with any of my Macs.
