Got this error message on startup today, last shutdown was as normal, TM ejected and removed from desktop, iMac shut down.

USB Cable TM, not Time Capsule

I've Disk Utility verified, it failed, so reformatted drive, now doing full TM backup.

Disk Utility now shows verify OK, repair not required.

Any ideas as to why this error occurred, no problems at all (ever) for at least a year.

One thing, I'm now glad I also CCC total image copy backup to another disc, plus daily USB flash drive & DVD backups of my personal and important Data.

Plus direct iMac to other external HDD copies of my photo's, personal movies and other data.

Belt, braces and shoe laces for me.

Time Machine now OK, was it the external HDD playing up, or TM app ?

I'd say it was the drive. TM is pretty solid, as far as I can tell.

I'd also put my money on the drive.
Time Machine has been very solid for me, too. I'd have it replaced ASAP.

There has been a couple of co-incidences, so I wonder if there was a high mains voltage spike, despite local power company saying not.

I also lost a CCTV DVR the night before, 5v/12v rail dead, PSU OK, and last night two of my wireless home phones beeped, one ok after, the other the digital answer machine built in activated, which I have disabled again.

The TM HDD is behaving ok, so I will continue my programme of backing up many items in different ways, and see what happens.

Having side that, the other items were not on surge suppressed sockets, whilst my iMac, TM and other technology is on suppressed sockets.

Thanks for your replies, they have confirmed my suspicions about it being an external hardware fault.

Have you tried running Disk First Aid on your drive?

I'm not sure trying to verify it under OS 9 or earlier will really help the situation at all, especially since he's already run Disk Utility over it several times - before and after formatting it.

Reformatting is usually not necessary. Disk Warrior will save the day if the hard drive is the only backup. It repairs most disks that Disk Utility won't. It takes a while but the wait is worth it.

The nice thing about Disk Warrior is that it figures out what repairs should be done, but does not write the repairs to the disk without your permission. You get to preview all changes before you commit to the repair.
