Hey All.
I have a Macbook Pro running Tiger version 10.4.11
I was thinking of getting an external webcam to make it easier to follow the constant movements of my 1-year-old son. Grandma watches him through Yahoo Messenger. It's getting impossible to follow him using the built-in iSight.
Does anybody know if I can connect an external webcam for this purpose?
Thanks!

Yes you can, but you will need to get hold of either an original FireWire iSight second hand, or use third party software to use a non-Apple USB webcam. E.g. macam

P.S. Check which third-party webcams are supported (and supported well) by the software - not all of them are.

You don't need extra software like macam. Just get a camera which is UVC compliant - OS X includes drivers for UVC cameras.

This one is cheap and works great.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Also, your grandmother should switch to Yahoo messenger. Unless its video capabilities improved dramatically since I used it last, its video chat is horrible compared to iChat or Skype.

You should definitely switch to Skype.
