I have a Mac G5 dual 1.8 tower with an 80GB drive (Maxtor) installed for backup. OS 10.4.11

Today the Backup disk icon is not visible on the desktop. Disk Utilities reveals error "underlying task reported failure on exit" whatever that means. After verifying disk and repairing disk it says all is good but still no icon. I also see that the backup disk is greyed out in the first aid box, for "Mount Point" it says "Not Mounted" but when I click the "Mount" button nothing happens.

I tried restarting and got this message, "extensions/10kitusbMassStorage.kext" was not installed properly and can not be used.

I'm not very tech savvy and those ominous messages are meaningless to me. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea where to start to recover access to my backup drive.

Is the backup drive in an external USB case? Or is it in the 2nd internal bay?

It's in the second bay inside the machine. I forgot to add that it's been in there working fine for about 3 years.

There's something wrong with the USB mass storage kext - which you need for external USB hard drives. Try a permissions repair on the boot disk. But that error is a red herring - it has nothing to do with internal drives. Hence my double-checking if the backup drive was an external.

When you select the backup HD's icon in Disk Utility, look at the bottom of the utility window. What does the SMART status say? It should say 'Verified'. Anything else would suggest a pending drive failure. Assuming the status is ok...

Pick up a copy of DiskWarrior by Alsoft. Your backup drive has some directory damage that Disk Utility doesn't know how to repair. Alternative: if you don't mind losing the data on the backup drive, reformat it. Either solution will make the drive appear again.

SMART status says, "not supported." Doesn't sound good. I guess this means I should have made a backup of the backup. Is it worth trying DiskWarrior anyway? Also, before I go through the verify and repair routines there is a red line saying, "invalid volume header" and I assume that's what is being repaired.

I really appreciate your expert insight and efforts on my behalf.

On a slightly different topic, I also screwed up trying to move my address book from my new iMac to this G5 machine. The result is the updated address book that I copied onto the G5 won't open. Obviously something more than copy and paste is required but I don't know what. Should I start a separate thread on this topic? Thanks again for your help.

"Not Supported" just means that the drive doesn't support the SMART tests and thus can't run them, not that the drive failed the tests. I'd say there's a pretty decent chance that the problem could be fixed either by DiskWarrior or by a reformat.

One thing, though - if the drive is a Time Machine backup, DiskWarrior will likely take a long time to finish.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
