Yeah, I finally had to do it. I took my MM apart and cleaned the snot out of it. Well, not literally "snot," but you understand what I mean-skin oil with dust and crud, the odd hair, loose dust, etc. I have been using this mouse daily for almost two years, and up until now the "turn the thing over and roll the scroll ball on the mouse pad" trick had worked OK.
Anyway, it took about 10 minutes, including walking to the other room to get the super glue, then after finding out it was "super empty" walking to yet another room to grab a tube of white latex caulk. I figure I'll give old MM a rest for a few hours while the caulk cures and gets a good grip on the trim ring.
One observation on the design: technically and electronically it's great-clean, neat, simple inside, with a tried-and-true trackball design that includes magnets to hold the TINY rollers in their places. But that trim ring-the thing that holds it all together? Yeah, they could have done WAY better. There's plenty of space and material in the shell for them to have used tabs instead of glue or whatever other technique they did to secure the trim ring in place. It could have been a much more elegant design with that "customer friendly" bit in place.
At the moment I'm using a tiny little scroll-wheel mouse I keep in my pack for use with my MBP, and it's weird to use such a small mouse at the desk. But it's working and that's all that matters.

Ball mice? I suggest a Microsoft laser mouse that will last you a decade without any fuss.

If customer service is a priority, personal experience says go with Logitech instead of Microsoft. I have had issues with both, MS refused to acknowledge my mouse was faulty and blamed my mouse pad (yeah, sure, every mouse pad I had didn't fit that MS mouse, and I guess it has to be the same with my desks… how nice of them). So, last week my Logitech mouse battery didn't recharge anymore, the dumb seller didn't want to replace it, I talked to Logitech and in a matter of days I got a new mouse delivered by UPS at no cost.
So, not only are Logitech mice nicer than MS mice but their customer support is miles ahead of MS's.

Well my latex caulk worked great to re-attach the trim ring. Please note that the MightyMouse has a "SCROLL BALL," not a ball that picks up mouse movements, though the mechanism is similar. And I've had NO problems with the mouse other than this feature being, by its very nature, prone to getting dirty because I touch it with my hands.
I've had both MS and Logitech mice. I've appreciated the way Logitech thinks about the user, and I've appreciated Microsoft's innovations in mouse body shape. But I didn't get one of those with my iMac when I bought the computer, so I'm sticking with the MightyMouse for now.

this is the best mouse I have ever used. it's probably at least 8 years old. unfortunately it's PS/2 and I don't think PS/2 to usb converters work very well so I do not use it regularly
