Budget is $200, it will be used in a lab for scanning prot gels, etc, dirty stuff.
It will be run in OS X computers, so good software/drivers for OS X is a must. A USB port will help considerably, 1200 dpi.
Which brand/model would you recommend?

I went out looking for a Mac-compatible scanner a while back, and wound up buying an all-in-one Canon. Very nice setup: Pixma MX-310. Really high quality scans, it's a full-on sheet feeding fax machine, it copies in B&W or color, and oh yeah, it's a nice photo-quality printer too.

I'd also recommend Canon. I bought a anon PIXMA MP980 a few months ago and have been very happy with it.
It's price is around $280, but there is currently a $100 mail in rebate promotion which would put it < $200.

Canon Lide 600F. Comes in under your budget. USB-powered, so no power brick anywhere. Can sit upright on your desk, so it has a small footprint. Comes with a film scan attachment.
