So.... I went and bought a 500gig Ex HD for my G4/400 (yeah its been running that long...lol), but when i plggued it in, there was only 137 gig available. I found out that older comps cant handle all the space available later...
But now I got a brand new 27" iMac (which kicks a$$ btw...lol) How do i get back all the space that was lost and bring the drive back up to 500gig? Did i lose that space forever?
I tried using the Disc Utility>Erase, but its not helping...
Any Clues...
Please...?

Is it a branded external HDD or did you put a HDD into an external case?
Screenshot of the disk in disk utility please.

I highly suspect, the limitation is in the chipset of your enclosure, you can look for a firmware update, but you're probably better off buying a new enclosure, especially when you can now take advantage of Firewire 800 (or USB 2.0 for that matter).

The 137GB (28-bit LBA) limitation should only apply to internal drives on an older Mac. Any FW/USB/etc device should be fine. Hard to believe Oxford made a modern chipset with that limitation. Very strange.

Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 1Q10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 1Q10 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010

The original Oxford 911 chip has the limitation. When bigger drives came out, Oxford released updated chips.

Wow, I guess I didn't pay much attention to FW chipsets back in the day. Surprising that someone would build a high capacity external with that chipset.

From the OPs wording, I suspect he assembled the drive + enclosure. He just picked an enclosure model that hadn't been updated - or he used an older enclosure that was sitting around.
