I have a Hewlett-Packard 6 MP, connected to my 24" white iMac through ethernet and a Hewlett-Packard Jet-Direct 300x.

The 6 MP is a postscript printer and listed as compatible under Snow Leopard.

I did the following, following instructions in David Pogue's Snow Leopard book

1. When printer didn't show up, I chose "add printer"

2. In add printer screen I chose "IP".

Chose HP jet-direct socket.

Entered IP address in the field. Made sure I had the right IP address by printing out test page of HP printer.

"Generic postcript printer" appeared in the printer driver line.

I clicked add, and that was it.

But it doesn't work.

My computer cannot connect to the printer.

I could do it thanks to the info here:

10.6: Get an HP print server working with Snow Leopard - Mac OS X Hints

And no thanks to David Pogue.

I did a cold reset on my Jet-Direct 300x.

Then I changed the ethernet address of my mac in "network", as described, and entered "192.0.0.10" (No idea how that works, when my router has the address 192.0.0.192).

I just wanted to go to the terminal to type "telnet 192.0.0.192" (as described at the above address) when my 6MP suddenly started printing the queue. Without me having been through the whole process.

(I have the impression that the key thing was to switch the Network connection from DHCP to manually, and the number I entered didn't matter that much).

OK, I did it. I don't know how a computer IP of 192.0.0.10 can connect to a print server, whose address is "192.0.0.192", but this is why I'm a writer and photographer and not a computer man.

If somebody can explain that last thing to me, how to different addresses suddenly connect, I'd be glad to know what I just did.

Separate network devices MUST have different IP addresses, otherwise it would be like multiple people having the same telephone number.

I thought what I put in that Ethernet menu was the target address ( like putting in someone's phone number to call him).

So that 192.0.0.10 was giving my computer an IP address, not giving my computer an IP address to dial...

No, you gave your printer the same IP as your computer. You're lucky your internet still works.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
