tried scouring the forums and troubleshooting according to what i've found and so far, no dice. i have an iMac 2.8 (May 2008), 500GB, 1GB RAM, OS 10.5.8;
it just happened suddenly: "usb over current notice. a usb device is currently drawing too much power. the whub to which it is attached will be deactivated."
i tried using a different printer cable; plugging it into a usb powered (plugged into an electrical socket) hub (also tried plugging other peripherals into the hub to see if they worked: yes, they did).
everything else works except for the printer and it immediately shows that notice once i plug the printer cable into the computer.
do i now need to get a new power supply for the printer????? could this be it? what happened was that i had earlier unplugged the power supply of the printer itself from the wall but soon after plugged it back. could there have been a power surge there?
also, the printer itself powers up well. i've even photo copied something on it to see if it works. (it does).
thanks again in advance.

Sounds like too much is coming from the hub to your printer. Have you tried directly plugging the printer into your iMac, or alternatively using an unpowered USB hub?

i've tried hooking the printer directly to the mac.... that's how i got to trying the other workarounds :/
unpowered usb hub? let me see if i have one lying around somewhere, but maybe i don't.
in the meantime, other tips would be great.

try a different USB port on your iMac.
try the ports on your keyboard if its a wired one.
For whatever reason, your HP is drawing too much power from the USB port. I don't think a new power supply would help, but a factory reset on your HP printer might.

still doesn't work with the factory reset. any other ideas?
would hate getting a new printer just because of this.
