I just read that FireWire 3200 will run on all FireWire 800 hardware.
Is this true? How could this be possible?

Firewire is backward compatible. Technically you could even run the S3200 on an S400 port.

It just won't run at FW3200 speed.

That's what I had in mind. You can use the port and the interface, but the speed will stay 800.

Correct.
I've been hearing about Firewire 3200 for a few years but haven't seen any products.

I'm getting the idea that it may never come.
USB 3.0 seems to be so powerful and promising. And eSATA may just go the way of FireWire3200 as well.
