I just recently posted about getting an overwritten file back. I had to let that image go.

But now I found a copy of this image. I had sent a full resolution file to the model that's in it.

Now this one: she has the image on an external hard drive, but she has dropped the hard drive, and it no longer works.

I guess the range of damages can go from a damaged casing to truly destroyed mechanics of the actual spinning disk.

She has information on it that needs saving, and I'm interested in getting that image.

What options does she have to get her data off that drive without spending a fortune.

What steps would you suggest to take in regards to that drive.

(I haven't gotten details about manufacturer, model, size, etc. yet - is this important at all in such a case?)

The basic process would be to take the drive out of the enclosure and see if it runs through some other interface.

I agree with Glenn. In general, the actual drives are built better than the enclosures. The enclosure interface board could have taken physical damage when connectors / mounting screws got torqued. You may find the actual drive inside is OK - especially if the drive was not running when dropped.

If the drive inside is damaged, then things get expensive.

Thanks.

I'll ask her if the drive was on when hitting the ground.
