I am currently returning my new Toshiba Canvio 500gig USB drive since it will not reliably back up my Nehelem Mac Pro (works fine initially and backs up for a day or two then fails, requiring a disk first aid repair).

What would you recommend for an external drive? I have my eye on this LaCie Quadra with Firewire 800, but it's nearly two years old.

I just bought this WD 2TB drive for $114 at Amazon. The price is now a bit higher ($119), but still worth it. I can't find a similar 2TB drive for anywhere close to this price. Plus the drive is absolutely silent. I bought two, and configured it as a 4TB RAID for Time Machine.
