When a program like MS Word or Excel sends the info to a color laser printer that some text (or parts of a graphic) are black and others are color will the laser automatically and always use only black ink from the black cartridge for the black text?

I recently bought a Brother HL-3040cn. Great printer, very low price. But under print settings you can choose "auto," "color" or "mono." I'm assuming that if you choose "auto" and have just a few characters on a page that are not black that almost no colored ink will be used. But it seems to me that should be true for the "color" setting as well. Anyone know?

As far as I know, for many printers, if you use the ‘colour’ option, it will force everything to printed with CMY toner, including black. Auto is usually your best bet, and in many apps, there’s even a box to choose whether to handle black as ‘true black’ (which is a misnomer, since it’s not only K, but complete CMYK coverage).
