Hi,
I have an iMac, and I'm running OS X 10.6.5. I'm trying to use an Audio Technica USB turntable to convert LPs to MP3. I used this turntable on my old PC, it connected fine, and I had no issues. However I recently switched to Mac, and my iMac is not recognizing the turntable when I plug it into the USB slot. I know for a fact that it's not the USB port on my computer because it works for other devices. I highly doubt it's the cable, as it worked fine on my PC, and the record player has been sitting in a closet untouched for about a year.
The turntable is made to be used with both macs and PCs. I'm using the software that came with the turntable (Audacity). When I plug the turntable into the USB slot, I went into the sound settings and under input, there was no option for USB Audio Codec. Also, under sound preferences in Audacity, there was no option for USB Audio Codec for imput. So it looks like my computer is not recognizing the turntable at all.

Has anyone else experienced an issue like this? Is there something I need to install in order to use my turntable?

What option does the Sound control panel give you for input? It wouldn't list codecs. It would list devices or ports.

The options in the sound preferences are built in mic, and Line in input. For Audacity the input options are built in mic and built in line in. The reason why I wrote USB audio codec, is because in the instruction manaul for the turntable, it says that there should be an option for USB audio codec in Audacity and in the Mac's sound options.

Try the other USB port.

Is the turntable itself working?

The turntable works fine, when I plug it in, the arm moves, and when I move the arm, the turntable spins. Like I said earlier, I doubt that it's the USB port. I've been using the USB port for my phone, and it worked fine. I emailed support at Audio Technica, and here's what they said:

This sounds like the USB audio codec, which is part of the operating system, is missing.  I suggest that you contact the folks at Apple to find out if there is a download for this.

Does this make sense to you?

Is it this model? You might try using the RCA-to-mini adapter cord that came with it and plugging-in to the iMac's audio input jack. Make sure you have the switch on the turntable set to "Line" if you go this route.

No, I have the ATLP2D model. it does have RCA cables though, so if I can't figure this out, I'll give that a try.

Also, make sure you have the latest version of Audacity. You can find it here under Recommended Download.

Fwiw, you don't seem to be alone with this problem. In addition to using the line-in port, another solution I've seen is for you to hook the turntable to the iMac using USB and rebooting the iMac with the turntable connected.

USB is weird under 10.6.5. Many USB MIDI interfaces stop working suddenly for no reason, too (not mine, though).

Either Apple ****ed this up heavily, or an awful lot of USB device manufacturers weren't exactly following spec.
