I'm looking for a "cheap" USB thermometer. I don't need any fancy features, just a basic thermometer with a CLI app that will give me the temperature when asked. I don't need any fancy logging/analyzing software, I'm just going to use a script to periodically load the temp into a database. The rest will be done in PHP.

So I have googled around. I've found this device in multiple forms all over the place: Amazon.com: TEMPer USB Thermometer w/ Alerts: Electronics
But it always gets poor reviews, and claims it's windows-only. It's always $10-$15 though. I've found other much fancier models that work with OS X, but they're over $100. This whole project is just for fun, I really don't want to spend much money on it at all. Any suggestions?

We just bought some 1wire gear for temperature monitoring. About $50 for the first one, $15 for each additional measuring point.

LinkUSBi - 1-Wire USB Interface + T-Sense - Temperature Sensor

Sample scripts, etc here.

And it's Windows-only, that doesn't help.

A company that makes USB thermometers has donated one to my ColdMac project. So I'm all set now. I have great thermal data, the thermometer works really well.
