Would a parallel port laser printer work with modern macs via parallel port-usb converter?

It can sometimes work, yes, but it really seems hit or miss if it really will. You're probably better off replacing the printer.

What printer is it? If it's a HP you could probably put a jetdirect card in it.

I was able to get my 15-year-old HP going with a parallel-to-Ethernet print server jobby.
