Is DisplayPort a failed standard for monitor connections? The reason I ask is that I have a specific need for an LCD with Displayport as a requirement that is in the range of 21-24", no larger. In searching around, I've only seen a couple of possible models to choose from. I saw one Dell Precision model, I believe, which was poorly reviewed, and aside from that the only choice that looks at all appealing is the NEC MultiSync E231.

I know that DisplayPort found more in the larger sized screens, but even then it seems that DVI is still the king. Thoughts/recommendations are appreciated.

Dell have some, HP have some very good DisplayPort monitors as well. I wouldn't call it failed, but certainly not the next all-around standard.

I don't think it's been around long enough to make any broad proclamations.

Well, VGA has been dead for ten years, and it's not getting phased out until 2016. Up until recently, there were still VGA-only discount monitors.

A few DisplayPort monitors from Dell in the 21-24" range:

UltraSharp U2211H 21.5 inch Monitor Details
UltraSharp U2311H 23 inch Monitor Details
Dell UltraSharp™ U2410 Monitor with PremierColor technology

A few from HP:

HP ZR22w 21.5-inch S-IPS LCD Monitor overview - HP Small & Medium Business products
HP ZR24w 24-inch S-IPS LCD Monitor overview - HP Small & Medium Business products
HP LP2475w 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor overview - HP Small & Medium Business products

These monitors all use top-of-the-line IPS panels, and should be fantastic monitors.

Edit: there actually appear to be a host of DisplayPort-equipped monitors in this size range from NEC, Lenovo, LaCie, and Eizo. Some of them even lack DVI ports, bizarrely (Lenovo). There's a great list here:

Thank you for the replies. Very helpful post, Charles. I guess I was looking in the wrong places (although there didn't seem to be much to choose from over at New Egg).

FWIW, I just installed some Dell hardware for a customer and the (business) desktops came with VGA-only video cards. All this just to keep the costs down.

I don't think it's a failed standard, but PCs have been very slow at adopting new standards. Many pc notebooks come with VGA ports even though Mac had them since the TiBook G4 ten years ago!

The other thing is that HDMI is a competing standard (in terms of plugs) and there is no clear winner yet. TV sets use HDMI while many high-quality monitors use DisplayPort.

I recommend the HP ZR24w. I bought one last year and it's an excellent display panel. They can be had for pretty cheap if you can find one on sale.

Don't forget to grab one of these cables.
