Apple TV vs. Roku

I'm trying to decide which of these to buy (the top of the line Roku). My main question is which one would make it easiest to play .avi files through the device. I assume I could get a converter, convert the .avi files to .m4v, then stream them through the Apple TV via iTunes. On the other hand, Plex runs on Roku without having to jailbreak the device, and Roku allows for playback from a usb drive. If converting to .m4v would be simple enough I might go with the Apple TV for brand loyalty (and because it has HBO Go), but otherwise the Roku is looking more attractive (plus I could get HBO Go by streaming through Plex on the Roku, right?). Any thoughts?
Also, anyone think the WDTV is the way to go?

I dumped the Roku the minute the ATV2 came out.
Granted, I don't have many movies in avi format since I convert myself with Handbrake.

Converting movies is a hassle though...

True but jailbreaking the ATV2 to play .avi files is fairly easy.

Exactly. ATV1 was too limited in horse power to really make sense, even jailbroken.
ATV2 is awesome.

I've not found that to be the case. Set up a few folder actions with Automator and Handbrake and the process really takes care of itself.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but I find the process of properly tagging ripped files to be tedious.

A good point, as I don't really care about the meta data myself. I just usually do some minimal renaming (removing periods and underscores) and throw it in the iTunes library. If I'm saving something permanently it moves to my plex library, not iTunes.

It also becomes a world of difference between ripping movies and ripping TV shows. The former is much less time consuming, per disc.

Not currently. I had boxee on my ATV1, it sucked and wasn't usable. (ATV's hardware wasn't up to the job).
