I went looking for a Mac-friendly scanner and wound up with a Canon all-in-one, the Pixma MX310. The drivers and other software that come with it are very easy to use (certainly not pro-grade stuff, but definitely useful), and it has really good resolution. It offers both flatbed and document feeder scanning, which is a real help at times.

FWIW, I too am a pretty satisfied MX310 owner and have been for years now, although it seems like my document feeder pulls my documents slightly at an angle so that they don't scan completely straight. (But unless it's for something absolutely critical I can deal with that issue given that the document feeder saves me from having to flatbed scan 20 pages individually.) The MX310's newest drivers require OS X 10.5 at a minimum, but that's not a problem because that's what the OP is running. The model is also quite good on ink for an inkjet in my opinion, and is lower maintenance than other inkjets I've had. The only thing I don't care too much for is the dim B&W status display, but that's to be expected in an entry level multi-function office printer. And in terms of Mac support Canon has always treated Mac users very well.

Btw, the MX310 was apparently replaced by the current MX320, which looks a little sleeker but mostly the same machine. Canon has a really nice range of progressively better models available if you want WIFI or a better LCD.

many thanks for this fine advice Ill stash it for the future

i got Image Capture.app to work. one needed to put the iimage size in the template as the defaults are all 0 x 0

seems to work fine. of course it would be great to "save" the prefered scanning numbers as a template but ...

You're welcome.

Yeah, Image Capture can be annoying at times, but it's better than nothing.

SANE doesn't work in any Adobe product. I don't know why they include the plugin, I've never gotten it to work, either.

It's annoyingly buggy, but at least it's free.

If you want a nicely polished, complete scan solution for any scanner, you'll want to check out VueScan. It's reasonably priced, and is available for OS X, Windows, and Linux.
