My son has moved back home and brought his 10.3.9 G5 with him. I got it on our Airport network just fine, but I've run into a snag trying to get the G5 setup to print to the networked printer, an HP4280 all-in-one.
The G5 sees the printer via Rendevous, but needs a driver installed. Here's where it gets aggrivating...
I go to
HP's website and download the driver for the printer and the OS. A whopping 167megs! Of course, it's crammed-full of HP's bloatware utilities.
I run the installer on the G5 and it seems to install just fine. But, of course, it can't be that simple. Now, I have to run the HP Setup Assistant in order to get the driver actually installed. Fine. I run it. In the window, I see the printer, so I select it and click "Continue", at which point, the window cycles itself, the listing for the printer disappears, and I get a dialog that says "If your printer isn't listed then the driver isn't supported on this OS". WTF??? This was the 10.3-specific installer.
So, what's up with this? Am I correct in guessing the HP installer is too braindead to recognize a networked printer? Am I going to have to unhook the printer from the Airport, and lug it to my kid's room, hook it up to the G5 so the HP installer will recognize it?
God, I hate HP stuff. 167megs just to get a single printer driver? And it won't install?
