HI all could use some advise...
I recently saw my 27" iMac tell me that my HD was failing and should replace it soon.... so i did... with a 2Tb hd as opposed to the original 1Tb hd, preinstalled in the iMac, (hey, might as well upgrade right?)
the operation went really well until i went to connect the thermal sensor onto the new drive... it seems the pin set on the drive was diff than what the connector was made for and therefore wouldnt connect to the new drive, so i had to make a decision... so i did... i removed the thermal sensor cable from the iMac.
The question is... how much trouble could this get me into? is it going to explode or something, or will i just have to survive with the fans running non-stop??? (which prolly aint good either, but...)
could really use u guys on this one.....
Thanks
~S~

An Apple tech recommended this, free: smcFanControl 2.3 released It seems to do something, but it does not modulate the fan noise, much as it tones it down uniformly. Still much noise. $30 seems a lot for what should be a straightforward app. Seth, did you do the one hour trial? I'm on it right now, will be back with my observations

The silence is deafening. The second it finished install, total quiet.Even if I select a minimum speed of 2000rpm, which is double the lowest, it's whisper quiet. I'm going to monitor temps and post back.
BTW, I have no involvement with the app makers.

It's not an easy question, and it depends on the exact model year of your iMac. What model year do you have?

The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

I think he was referring to the benefit provided by the fan modulating app, not our lack of response.

Thanks, Q, that is right, but how easy to be misunderstood in just writing. Thank you P for responding. Data: noise, barely perceptible. Temp as per SMART: 129F, fan speed 2,099rpm. Am still a tad grouchy about the price, but also so relieved not to hear that NOISE! So, I recommend the app.
BTW, the back of the computer is still as hot as ever, could crisp bacon on it heh heh.
