Is anyone aware of a combo unit that will copy VHS protected tapes to DVD and DVR (cable box) to DVD ? I OWN many old tapes that I want to preserve onto DVD - and most combo recorders can't get past the VHS tape (Macrovision?) copy protection. I'm not doing anything illegal - I purchased ALL of these VHS tapes want to make a copy for myself.

Why a combo unit, have you considered a simple VHS to DVD recorder transfer ?

If the Macrovision is defeating him on a combo unit, I don't think separate units linked by cables would help. He needs to have some hardware or software correction that defeats the Macrovision, right?

Yep. And he'll have to Google to find it as I'm pretty sure we can't discuss such things here.

Well, do you think Hollywood's really concerned at all about their last war, which took place in ancient times by technology standards? No one's going to get hassled for VHS duplication these days. It would be like prosecuting someone for running an illegal Gutenberg printing press.

I bought one of these: Grex Advanced digital video stabilizer with high quality S-Video support

We have a whole library of educational VHS tapes that were never released on DVD, so we're using a Sony VRD-MC5 recorder connected to a VHS cassette player. The Grex adapter goes between the VHS and Sony recorder, then strips the Macrovision signal so you can make backups of your VHS tapes to DVD. The adapter works great.

The Sony recorder is also easy. I just stick a DVD in and hit record. It automatically finishes the DVD after about 2 hours worth of video (but you can set the compression rate for up to 6 hours) so you don't have to monitor it. Just put in a new VHS tape and DVD every couple hours.

WARNING: The company is based in Israel, and immediately after we ordered the adapter, our school's credit card number was stolen. We still got the adapter just fine. However, if there's any way of ordering it not directly through them, I suggest doing it that way.
