I've been considering getting an ATV3 for a while now. I'm wondering if anyone has had any issues with streaming content, particularly "lag" issues. I ask because I have a PS3 that I use to stream media and I often run into lag issues with it...I'll be streaming a TV show, 2 minutes in it will freeze up for 5-10 seconds then pick back up...sometimes it happens more frequently, sometimes it will freeze up longer than 5-10 seconds, sometimes it will just drop the connection completely.

I'm confident that Apple has this figured out and that the ATV can handle streaming media MUCH better than the PS3+sh*tty media streaming software, but I'm curious to know if anyone has experienced similar issues. I'm so hell bent on local storage now because of this and the idea of switching to an "all streaming" device makes me a little nervous. :/

Also, another question...the AirPlay mirroring feature, do you have to have an iPad(I'm guessing 2 or higher) or iPhone 4s for this to work or can you use it with a regular iPhone 4?

Thanks!

I assume you are talking about the ATV2, since there is no ATV3 yet.

I have no streaming issues at all, neither from the internet (like Hulu, Amazon Video or Netflix), or from my iMac.
My ATV2 is connected via ethernet to my Airport Extreme, which is hard-wired to my Cable Modem and my iMac.

I can't comment on the ATV2 using WiFi.

Isn't there the original Apple TV, Apple TV2, then a faster, upgraded version of the Apple TV2 (maybe not technically called the ATV3, but the third "version" of the ATV so far)?

WiFi streaming was what I was concerned about, I should have clarified. I wouldn't have any reservations at all if everything was hardwired together.

There is definitely an Apple TV 3. It's the last one released and yes, it's basically just an upgraded ATV2. (Note that if you're planning on jailbreaking the ATV and installing something like Firecore, which I highly recommend, then my understanding is that the ATV3 still hasn't been jailbroken. I'll be upgrading my ATV2 when that happens, as the new processing power will definitely help when it comes to playing 1080p files from the computer.

I generally don't have any problems streaming with my ATV2, but it is connected via ethernet to the cable modem.

However, very occasionally it does get a little slow and I drop the stream - that seems to be a problem with Netflix and/or iTunes during peak download times, though. It's rare but it has happened.

I did try Wifi and it was slightly slower when it came to loading iTunes movies, but I didn't have any additional dropped streams as you've indicated.

Ah, you are right. I have just never heard it referred to as ATV3. I didn't know that only the ATV2 can be jailbroken, not the ATV3. In light of that, a distinction makes sense.

Yeah, it kind of sucks to be honest. The ATV2 is clearly slightly underpowered for the extra features that Firecore offers; I generally have some trouble with many 1080p mkv files (repeated buffering, etc.), and there's definitely more of a GUI lag.

Hopefully they find a way to get Firecore on the new version - in my opinion the AppleTV is incredibly limited with the standard Apple software. I'll be buying a new ATV3 as soon as they announce it.
