Hi.
I've been looking for a good cheap laptop for my 7 year old daughter for a while now and while looking through these forums, I read a little about the eMate. I went and did some more looking online and think this would be perfect for her. I just don't know where to get one. I know in older topics, you guys suggested eBay, but I would rather stear clear of auctions. I've had 2 bad experiences with them. Any help would be appreciated as to where to find an eMate or alternatives to one. Also, how is the handwriting on it? Thanks.

1. Very hard to find other than ebay
2. Better off with Palm Pilot and a Foldable keyboard (if you need a keyboard. Much more SW avaible, and it can sync with your computer.

macvillage obviously never dealt with a newton.
the emate is one of the best designs to come out of apple, and is an absolute beauty for kids to use. you can find them on ebay, but they get pretty expensive... but if u want to ask the newton users themselves, ask on the newtontalk mailing list at newtontalk.net

I have to delt with one, just never really liked it. Personal opinion. I just found the palm to be the best of the non-laptop solutions. Plus they are really cheap, and lots of software to boot.

I've found some brand new emates for sale in Sydney , Australia for $AUD130.00 . About $US70.
How does that pricing stack up ?

$70 in US dollars? No way, but if its true and I were you I'd buy them up and sell them on eBay for a nice profit. But again, i really doubt that they would be sitting around on a shelf 5 years later esp at that price.

I picked up an emate 300 the other day purely for nostailgic purposes, there is quite a lot of software out there, they are almost indestructable. If you are running a USB only mac then connecting will be a pain. I have an old PowerBook so I'll be IRing stuff to it. But it's a total toy for me. I'm not sure how much use you would get out of it if you wanted to use it like a palm or other organiser based tool.

Shreve Systems use to have emates. They carry a lot of vintage hardware. They have never listed them on their web site ( www.shrevesystems.com ) but if you call 1-800-227-3971 they may still have a few.
