<humiliation>

I'm sorry people, but I have to ask....

The only thing I really want to do with a PDA is be able to get my POP3 email AND Hotmail email wirelessly (OmniWeb, etc.,.)

PocketPC seems to be a much better and more robust platform. I was just wondering about the experience.

(God, I can't believe I'm asking this Winbloze kind of question.....)

Gee... should I be insulted?

Pocket PC's are the MAC's of the handheld/PDA world - superior and underappreciated. They are truly superior machines (like MAC's) in a world full of basic pda's like palms. Handspring, Sony and others take Palm OS devices to new levels but no where close to what can be done with Pocket PC's.

I LOVE MY MAC - my PowerBook. I also really really like my iPAQ Pocket PC!! My PPC is truly a computer in your pocket just like my powerbook is a portable supercomputer.

To answer your question. I AM a PROUD Pocket PC user/owner... almost as proud as I am of my MAC. I guess I'm totally in the minority when it comes to technology!

mm.... please come back!

That's the PDA I want! I really like the screens and the functionality of the iPaq's. A couple questions:

Are you using OmniSky or anything?
How do you sync things?
Can you sync Outlook?

Thanks so much!

I covet the compaq iPaqs I see p.c. users operating. If I could install a mobile version of Linux, or even better the Newton OS, I'd be all over one! Comparisons to the Palm or Visor are ridiculous. Look at the pocket p.c.'s screen. 240 x 320 resolution compared to Palm/Visor's 160 x 160! I had hoped the new m500 and m505 would have comparable screens to the iPaq and was hugely dissapointed when they were released with the same old displays. While I won't get an iPaq or Journada now, I'm definitely getting rid of my Palm Vx in favor of something with a better display. How can anyone look at their Palm after seeing the pocket p.c.? I've ordered the HandEra 330 (formerly TRG) and will sacrafice the convenience of my Omnisky modem for the better display.

I pass wind in your general direction
My Newton has been doing all of that for over 5 years and so much more, including wireless web access, GPS and butters my toast in the morning

newtons certainly seem cool, and i know their functionality is great, but the thing is as big as a laptop computer. hardly comparable to a palm sized device.

dilleet-
"I pass wind in your general direction"! HA!

I loved my Newton, but alas, it IS too darn big. I love the size of the Palms but that screen does suck.... but what about the performance of OmniSky and retreiving Hotmail or any other web based email?

*still rolling LOL

Am trying to sell a Pocket PC E115 (casio), if anyone here's interested...

no USB but I've been using it fine with infared and Virtual PC.

32mb ram, 133 processor, Office, etc. Am looking for about $450 (I'm in UK, and want to buy a Palm m500, which costs about that. will swap for one if anyone wants.)

If all you want is wireless POP and Hotmail, you could just get a WAP phone. It'd probably be cheaper.

Personally, I love PDA's as a concept but have been at least partially disappointed with just about every PDA that has ever been released. Palms are compact, but they are slow and have limited capabilities. PocketPCs are feature-packed, but they are very expensive, have a Windows-like interface, and don't support Macs. Newtons have a nice interface but are ultimately less convenient than Palms, and they are also very large. And all of these have text input methods that are almost painful compared to a keyboard.

I'm not trying to insult the many fans of these devices - I just hope PDAs get better someday.

The only way to sync Mac and iPaq is through VPC as you would have imagined. Anyway, the problem is that even if iPaq comes with a USB driver, you can't connect it directly to your Mac for some reason that I can't remember anymore. Anyway, what you can do is to sync it through IRDA or you can by a serial-USB transformer jack and connect it with a serial port sync stand to connect your Mac. This supposed to work (it worked with my Casio)
