If Apple wanted to do this portable mp3 thing, they should have done a portable CD-Player with built in mp3 playback that can rip and copy CDs, can be powered by the firewire bus and used as a CDRW. That would have been truly useful and possibly cheaper than a small 5GB HD.

There's no way the level of integration that you suggest would be cheaper that the iPod's price point. Having a portable CDRW? You would have to carry around a car battery with you.

This obviously isn't the right answer for everyone...but it most certainly is the answer for me. I tried several ways of keeping a large library of songs with me, and all of them involved burning some sort of CD and then carrying all the extra CDs with me. I have a Rio Volt, great concept, bulky and a pain in the ass to keep my library updated. Sony MD, great concept again, small, but still a pain in the ass to keep my library updated.

The iPod is perfect, everything I have on my G4 will always be available very quickly, all over 1 wire. No need to carry 47 MDs with me or other stuff.

Hey, Apple saw a niche, solved a single problem with an excellent device...

Josh

Look, everyone that has a problem with the syncing aspect go read the FAQ
http://a1504.g.akamai.net/7/1504/51/...iPod_FAQ-a.pdf

For anyone who doesn't understand this i'll put it in Craon for you. It only autosyncs with your primary computer. You can manually sync it,, inside iTunes, just like the nomad, and just like the Nomad you can't pull files off into iTunes,. So what's to bitch about.? The people who are criticising obviously are the same idiots that haven't read about it yet, or don't know what the hell they're talking about in the first place. I was critical about it at first too, but then I read the FAQ. This thing is awsome. You can put your user directory on it, or even some system software and your're at home where ever you go. I think that's great. Can you imagine walking into a computer store with your user directory on your iPod and getting questions answered while you look at you home system? Another interesting tidbit about this things is it can be used as external storage with non-computer devices. Can anyone say PS2. Now you can have saved games, with you where ever you go, including game skins, and what ever else your heart desire. If you don't think that's kool, how about Mini DV storage for Camcorders. The name the price, everything makes sense now, but with all it can do. I do wish they had made the capacity a little large, say 10 GB.

It won't do to well but it won't be discontinued like the Cube because production will be kept proportionate to sales. I see nouse for it because when i'm travelling I need peace of mind.

By the way, Sony makes a portable CDRW Discman that can also be used as a CDRW for desktop computers.

Also, if 2 iPODs could connect to each other over firewire it would bring a whole new arena to this mp3 trading thing! Too bad the feature isn't there.

1) The Toshiba mechanism used in the iPod is apparently only available as a 5GB drive. When Toshiba releases a bigger one, Apple can use it. Toshiba is one of the best providers of small, fast, rugged HDs, by the way, so it's not a simple matter of switching manufacturers.

2) MP3 sharing features are deliberately disabled in the iPod, alas. There's this little organization called the RIAA that would jump down Apple's throat if the iPod could easily download MP3 files to other Macs, or share them with other players.

Amorph, excellent point. A lot of the features that people are claiming that Apple "forgot" or didn't bother to include are regulated by law...just something to keep in mind.
